Telescopes
They like to site big modern telescope well away from street lights and pollution, and in places without many clouds. That cuts your options quite a bit. Then they like to have the minimum of air turbulence. Have you seen a mirage over a hot road? You get a similar effect, but smaller, whenever you have air movement. So they like to put telescopes in places with smooth air flow, which tends to mean the tops of mountains. So the three best sites in the world are La Palma, Mauna Kea in Hawaii, and La Silla in the Andes in Chile.
