This is the Queen of the Night, a phyllocactus. It's a common garden plant on the island, where it grows well, and in several places garden escapes are thriving. These spectacular flowers only bloom for one night, so you have to get up early to see the m by daylight. There is a much rarer version with red flowers. If you cross-pollinate the two varieties, you're much more likely to get fruits - and what fruits! They're as big as a large mango, and a vivid purple inside. You occasionally see them for sale at Mazo market, but they're pricey.
These particular flowers grow in the garden of my old neighbours. Early one morning I was leaving home for the observatory when I saw them, and I ran back for my camera.
