L4 Desde Pico de la Nieve

L4 La Caldera de Taburiente desde Pico de la Nieve 1

People used to think that Pico de la Nieve (Peak of the Snows) was the highest mountain on the island. Actually the Roque de los Muchachos is higher, but you can't see it from Santa Cruz. Whereas you can see Pico de la Nieve from much of Santa Cruz and the Breñas, and in winter you can often see snow on the top.

There's actually an icehouse, high up the mountain. In the days before refrigeration, the owner used to line it with pine needles, then pack it with snow in winter. Since the snow was well insulated, it kept for some time after the rest of the snow had melted. He used to go up with a mule or donkey, arrive at dawn to load the donkey with blocks of ice (well wrapped) which he'd sell in Santa Cruz.

I wanted to get a sunset photo of the Caldera from Pico de la Nieve. You can drive most of the way up, and I enjoyed walking the remainder. As it turned out, the sunset wasn't all that good, but I got this photo shortly before, so I was very pleased.

And then I had to walk down in the dark. And that's when I found out that the torch batteries were dying. I was extremely pleased to reach the car.
