Like a lot of churches on La Palma, the church at Santo Domingo, Garafia, is surprisingly large for the size of the village. That's because the population used to be much larger, some 6,000 instead of the current 2,000.
The church was built in the late16th century. At the time, any ship travelling from Spain to the Americas had to buy provisions for the Atlantic crossing in Santa Cruz de la Palma, by royal decree. Consequently, La Palma was rich. Churches built at this time are full of Flemish art, some of it stunning.
The church doesn't have official visiting hours, but do look inside if you can. The carved wooden ceiling is particularly beautiful.
In spite of the beautiful interior, my favourite photo of the church is this one of the outside. I like the way the pattern made by the roofs and walls is almost an abstract.
